SUMMARY Under general supervision and direction of an assigned Police supervisor or the Crossing Guard Supervisor, prepare crossing zone and escort and/or assist in the safe crossing of children at road crossings. Responsible for encouraging all children to comply with traffic crossing rules and assist in the safe conveyance of children on their way to school. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * Work an assigned post at a crossing; coordinate traffic flow and traffic signals where children cross on their way to school. * Report violations by either children or motoring public to the Crossing Guard Supervisor and/or assigned Police supervisor in charge of the crossing program. * Observe road traffic to determine best timing for road crossings; admit children and pedestrians into designated crossing locations; escort and assist children and pedestrians as needed to ensure safe crossings. * Monitor behavior of children and educate children regarding traffic safety as appropriate. * Turn on and off flashing lights to ensure safe crossing of children in crossing zone; place cones and signs in crossing zone. * Attend training meetings as assigned to enhance knowledge and professionalism. * May prepare various reports related to work time and work activities. * Promote professional and courteous relations with children, motorists and citizens contacted during shifts. * Explain traffic rules to motorists. * Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: High school diploma or GED. Experience: Related experience helpful but not required. Certifications/Licenses: * Valid Utah Driver's License KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: * Basic safety rules * Traffic control hazards Skill with: * Operating office equipment including computer equipment and software. Ability to: * Understand and explain traffic rules; direct the public to follow those rules. * Communicate clearly and professionally with children, motorists, pedestrians and school officials. * Provide signals to vehicles. * Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS Stand and walk for long periods of time. Carry traffic cones and set in position.
